One thing you must know before you bring home a puppy is they are fast learners. That makes an early training paramount prior to housebreaking a puppy, which is exposing the puppies to constructive socialization and toilet-training. Dog breeders with a fair amount of knowledge on the canine psychology will know that and whether the person abides by the rule or not sets the mark for him or her.

Accepting a pup from a dog shelter is an act of generosity in a distress situation. Similarly, the family member or a friend is typically frantic to find homes for an entire litter. Pet shops and other retailers are not specialists, have little knowledge of the breed and usually lack specific knowledge of the individual pup.

By contrast, buying a dog from a breeder has several advantages. A pedigree dog is more predictable across a whole range of factors such as personality, dimensions, and fur quality. In other words, buying a pedigree pure bred puppy leaves less to chance. There are almost 200 separate dog breeds usually recognized by dog authorities making it likely there is a breed that meets the preferences of any prospective pup owner.

To be classified as a pedigree dog, the animal must meet several criteria such as having documented parentage, both parents must be of the same breed, that breed must be recognized by authorities, the breeder must be registered with authorities, the dog parents must also be registered with authorities, and the pup must have a pedigree line tracing back at least three generations.

The Internet has made it easy to connect with canine breeders. Dog breeder directories have been created online in many countries across the globe. For each breeder, the directories will provide details of their breeding philosophy, size of kennel, full contact details, and so on.

Dog breeders are keen to sign themselves onto these directories as a means of self-promotion. The directories usually allow users to identify individual breeders by breed. Most directories will also have a Puppy Listings tab. It cannot get much easier than that.

              <!– @page { margin: 2cm } P { margin-bottom: 0.21cm } A:link { so-language: zxx } –>

Your dog must be really special to you. Therefore, you must do something very special to express how much you love it. Generally, we keep photographs of our loved ones in frames and display them on our walls. To show your love for your dog, buy a garden flag with the picture of your pet.

For putting a garden flag pole you must decorate your garden first. You can buy flower plants and garden decoration items to decorate your yard. If you have pets in the house, fencing is a great idea to keep your pets away from the flower beds. You should also make sure that the gate to the garden is always closed to keep away pets from straying into the garden and damaging it. In the middle put up a garden flag pole with a nice flag. So, now that you have erected a pole, why don’t you put a flag with your puppy’s face?

If you have a fierce dog as a pet, it is best to warn the outsiders that your house it guarded by it. It would also be a great idea to write a message on the flag. This will alert mischievous persons to stay away from your home. It will also help your guests to be alert about your guard. While you use your garden flag pole as a message board, why don’t you decorate it a bit? Decorating the garden flag pole make the pole look good thereby making it a decorative item to beautify your garden.

A flag pole can thus act as a great medium for communicating your care and concern for animals. You will not only be appreciated for the way you have decorated your garden, you will also be admired and respected for being generous towards animals. Your neighbors might try to imitate you after this as well!

So, enjoy your newfound status in the neighborhood by putting up a garden flag pole. Looking for a good dog accessory store? You can buy the pole and flag at affordable rates from www.ultimatedogstop.com. You can also get various pet supplies from this online store. They pride themselves on customer satisfaction which is why they are one of the leading suppliers in this field. Taking care of pets and providing entertainment for them is your duty so you definitely should not shy away from it.

A client, “Cindy” called because she was about to adopt a darling little dog. Her challenge was not the adoption, but feeling pushed into the adoption. It felt rather soon after the loss of her heart dog, Amelia and she was feeling as though her other dog at home – Ben would feel slighted.

We harbor a loyalty of our feelings for the animal that we lost. We do have to honor that space that the beloved animal left. Everyone is different in how they handle the loss and the discomfort it brings up. For some, they can’t stand the emptiness and have to fill the space with another animal right away. Others, it takes a long time to be ready for another animal to come in and take over their heart and home.

In the session, we connected with the dog Ben and he was okay about the idea of a new dog as it would be the first time in his 17 years that he would be on the top of the pack and could boss someone around! Fortunately the new dog is a little timid so this could be a good match.

Cindy had her doubts about the whole adoption. She confided that the night before, she connected with her heart dog Amelia (that had crossed over) and said “If I’m supposed to get this dog, please send me a sign”.

Cindy then told me her husband takes care of most of the errands but he was off on a project that day. So she went to the post office. She bought some stamps and when she started to place them on envelopes, she read the stamp. It said: Adopt a pet from a shelter today.

So often we brush off these signs. They are always there for us. It may not be the literal voice of authority we need to hear or an apparition in our driveway on our way to the grocery store. They are subtle and ever present.

The new dog will never fill that void. Nor will you fill the void for the people that are missing from this shelter dog’s life now. You can occupy space in the void together and discover a whole new little soul on your journey to heal.

Dog Bowl Aggression, and the Wonderful Resource We Waste Everyday…Part 2!!!

The last post gave you the skinny on the problem behaviors that food bowl aggression can lead to and why they happen. The next three posts will provide some options for ways to incorporate meal time into your dog’s training!

There are three basic techniques that you need to be familiar with as you work with Fido to eliminate the dog bowl aggression…

1) Use toys to feed your dogs

2) Feed your dogs from your hand

3) Have your dogs work for their food

So let’s take a look at each of these ways to use feeding time as a training tool!

The First Technique…Use toys to feed your dogs

As queried in an earlier blog post, why are we wasting feeding time and only giving the dog 60-90 seconds of unsupervised activity time from a bowl? (Thank you Dr. Dunbar!) Instead, we could use feeding times to teach, train and mold our furry four legged friends to use proper doggie manners! To get started, I suggest you feed your dogs at least twice a day (three if your schedule allows) and do not use a bowl. I want you to split up the feedings so the dog has their favorite point of the day (meal time) multiple times vs. only once. Toys will give your dogs more mental stimulation, thus helping to wear out the mind, which is much better than just letting them wolf down their food in 60-90 seconds which would leave them bored. (Remember idle hands…?) More importantly, toys make the dogs work for their food instead of just waiting for their human to fill the magic bowl!

It is important to remember classical conditioning at this point when you are feeding your dog (Pavlov anyone!) This is a great opportunity to build positive associations with food! Previously, we had just the 60-90 seconds to pair an association with dinner time, but as we use food dispensing toys, we might have upwards of 10-15 minutes to make those same connections! You can even freeze the toys with food in them and gain additional time while you eat! What do I mean by associations and classical conditioning? Well, if my dog is aggressive around, let’s say kids, while eating; I want kids to be present around the dog while the dog is eating! I always take steps to ensure safety, but with kids, you have to be extra careful! A simple and easy safety measure is to tether the dog when feeding them (remember to use a toy) and simply having the child in the room with the dog (but NOT sitting right next to him!) Tethering is also effective when you have multiple dog households, dogs that don’t really like each other or even with cats. Through use of toys as the means to deliver the food, you are positively reinforcing the association of chewing on toys as an appropriate behavior (rather than chewing on the couch, pillow, shoe, etc…!!!)

The goal is to create a subconscious mindset in your dog that all the good things in the world (food) happen when this stimulus that makes me nervous (child) is around. Please remember that this is not going to make your dog think “I love kids” just because they are around during meal times; but it is more like that warm fuzzy feeling those of us who love coffee get when we walk into a Starbucks. We associate the smell of coffee with a sense of well being!

Once again I want to stress that this does work with dogs with problems, but it is not a quick fix! I find that if I can teach people to use these techniques from puppyhood, these problems will rarely occur. So to those of you that have dogs that already have food bowl aggression, it’s time to get busy; and for those of you who have a puppy…let’s get started young so that you can build a positive association at feeding time from the very beginning!

Now we have toys at feeding time working for us…so what’s next? What about making food even more important (as well as your status and relationship with your dog?) Why not feed your dog by hand?

See the next blog post Dog Bowl Aggression, and the Wonderful Resource We Waste Everyday…Part 3!!! which focuses on the Second Technique – feeding your dog(s) from your hand (or by hand.)

Cardigan Welsh Corgi dogs, more popularly know as Corgis were used as cattle dogs in England as early as the 1920’s. Though often confused with the tailless Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Cardigan Corgis have their own set of characteristics that make them unique and cherished companions.

Perhaps the most unique characteristic of Cardigan Welsh Corgi dogs is its physical appearance. Some would describe the Corgi as a fox-like dog, trapped in a miniature dog’s body. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi has ears similar looking to that of a fox’s. It can be anywhere between 10-13 inches tall, weighing around 25-45 pounds. These dogs have somewhat stocky but elongated bodies with very short legs. It’s exterior coat ranges from short to medium length and comes in shades of brown or black with white markings.

Since Cardigan Welsh Corgis have short hair, they require very little grooming. Although most Corgis tend to shed on a seasonal basis – on these instances, daily brushing will certainly be beneficial.

As for its basic temperament, Cardigan Welsh Corgis are certainly affectionate and loving dogs. They are extremely alert and intelligent. However, they do have a natural tendency to nip due to their instincts as herding dogs. The good news is that since Corgis are very quick learners, training them to keep this potentially negative trait in check won’t be a problem.

As for those with children and other pets in their home, you would be delighted to know that Corgis adapt easily with proper socialization. However, never let a Corgi’s size deceive you. Corgis are generally calm dogs but have an instinctual tendency to bark whenever things don’t seem right. It is for this reason that Corgis make good watchdogs as well.

With a healthy diet and proper care, Corgis can live to about 12-15 years. However, there are a few health issues associated with this breed that should definitely be kept in check. Because of their built, Corgis are quite prone to obesity. As with other dog breeds, without ample exercise, obesity can eventually lead to spinal problems that can cause your dog extreme discomfort.

Other than that, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi makes for a delightful addition to any home. Not only are they great companions, they have great potential to join various dog competitions that involve obedience, tracking, agility, and herding trials. Just bear in mind the responsibility that comes with acquiring dogs of this breed and all shall go well.

Advantix may be used on your cat to take care of fleas anytime. Advantix is most useful for cats and kittens that already have been plagued with fleas. Advantix is not for the prevention of fleas and ticks.

If you have an indoor feline the risk of your cat getting fleas is fairly low. It is still possible for an indoor cat to get fleas but the threat is minimal. If you have an indoor cats you ought to keep a few doses of Advantix in the house, just in case. You don’t want to be rushing to the animal medical practitioner at the last minute and be required to pay too much for medication that can be ordered online for half the price.

If you already have some Advantix lying around the house check the expiration date. All treatments do have an expiration date. About the time of the expiration date most medications begin to lose their strength. The further past the prescription is, the less helpful a treatment may be. Also be sure that all treatment that you have around the house is still suitable for your cat. Most cats and kittens gain weight as they get older. You may have bought medication for your six pound cat that is in fact no longer useful because your cat has grown into a fourteen pound monster.

If you have an outdoor feline youshould weigh the benefits of Advantix vs Frontline. Think about Frontline instead to protect against fleas before they latch onto your feline. Frontline tends to make a cat a very inhospitable home for ticks. Frontline is also applied month-to-month and is low-cost peace of mind.

There is no better time to bond with a dog than when it is a puppy. Caring for puppies can be a difficult task, but the rewards are endless. A newborn puppy is very delicate and should mostly be under the care of the mother. However, when the puppy has left the litter and come to your home, you will have a number of responsibilities. You will need to ensure the puppy is growing properly, getting plenty of exercise and receiving the proper nutrition.

Newborn puppies should stay with their mothers until they are eight weeks old. This can depend on the breed, but most puppies will be weaned off their mothers by this time. As a dog owner, your role during this time is to make sure the mother is being cared for. You need to make sure she is in good health, receiving the proper nutrition and getting enough water. You also need to make sure she is safe.

After a puppy is weaned from the mother, the puppy can be brought home. This will be a difficult transition. Most puppies will cry at night because they miss their mothers and the rest of the litter. This whimpering may last for several nights. All you can do is provide comfort, nutrition and a safe home. When caring for puppies, make sure the environment is secure so that they cannot injure themselves or escape.

It is normal that a new puppy sleep a great deal for several weeks after leaving the litter. Adapting to the new environment and new people is taxing. Make sure you feed your puppy properly so that the puppy grows at the right pace. Puppies are very active and need lots of exercise. They are also not house-trained. It will take at least several weeks and sometimes much longer to successfully house-train a puppy. Be patient.

Taking care of a newborn puppy can be similar to caring for a newborn. Dog owners certainly see their pets as children. It is important to remember that the initial caring for puppies should be done by their mothers. The dog owner’s role is to care for the mother until the puppy is weaned and can be cared for by the owner in a safe home. Feed your puppy the right food. Give your puppy time to play and exercise. Don’t forget to show your puppy love and affection. These are the steps for raising a healthy and happy dog.

Clothes help protect us from cuts, scratches and bad weather and they have done the same for animals for centuries. Today the primary use for dog clothes is to keep dog’s dry and warm. The history of animal clothing dates back to King Arthur when they covered their horses to protect and identify them easily.

Dog clothes have been used in the military and law enforcement agencies for decades to keep dogs safe from attacks and the harsh environment. Even a thin layer like a t-shirt can help your dog stay warmer. As your dog grows old their metabolism slows down and they are not able to stay outside in the cold long enough.

Each dog has a distinct personality and it can be easily reflected or implied by clothing your pet in a sassy t-shirt or entire outfit. It seems the small breeds of dogs are the main target of dog clothing manufacturers but large breeds can benefit as well. Nowadays you can find all types of dog clothing including outfits for special occasions like Halloween, Christmas and even weddings.

Another great idea for summer is to wet the tee shirt with cold water to keep your dog cool. There are countless varieties of tee shirts on the market today. So many that you will have no problems in finding one that compliments your dog’s style. You will find plain shirts, fancy shirts and eco-friendly shirts.

Modern clothes are easy to fit and they are designed especially for various breeds of dog. Their clothes are machine washable and are available in a wide variety of colors, styles and sizes just like our clothes. Sweaters, t-shirts, and jackets seem to be popular with people who have large dogs. Running suits look slick if you are looking for small dogs clothes. You can even take into account your animal’s colors when picking out dog clothes. There are environmental friendly materials and materials designed specifically for keeping out the elements like snow and water.

Dog clothes are all designed to stretch over the head and front paws and some designs may use Velcro straps to keep them in place. There are no standard sizes for animal clothes and you will need to know these measurements to buy proper fitting gears. It is important to take a few simple measurements of your animal to the store as you look for dog clothes. Measure from the base of the neck to the tail, the height from the shoulder and around his midsection. You can fit anything from a Rottweiler to a Chihuahua with a wide range of sizes available. Getting a good fit is important if you want your dog to enjoy his new clothes.

You should give your dog the benefit of a sweater when the temperature drops below freezing, even if you don’t go for the cute designer outfits because warm clothes will protect him from harsh cold weather and will not fall ill.
